Max Sled 2010 What’s Hot and Not: HOT – Ski-Doo 1200 4-TEC Updates10/31/2009 - Max Sled Team
Ski-Doo entered the 4-stroke arena in 2002 with a V-Twin with much fanfare, but Yamaha came out with the RX-1 in 2003 and stole their thunder. Ski-Doo took a back seat to the 4-stroke and concentrated on ergonomics along with clean and lean 2-strokes. Still, 4-strokes were gaining popularity, so in 2009 Ski-Doo turned up the heat with their 1200 4-TEC. It’s a 120HP class engine placed in their REV-XR chassis and was one of the Max Sled Staff favorites last season. While we all liked the smooth midrange and decent top-end, the low end needed some work and at trail speeds it wasn’t the most consistent when trying to hold the throttle around 40MPH. The engine would “brake” right around that throttle position. You could figure it out and ride accordingly, but it was there.
Ski-Doo listened and they’ve improved the low-end response and engine braking on the 2010 version and we like it. It is smoother on low-end and at lower trail speeds and much better calibrated.
